Broadmead
Believe it or not, Broadmead acquired its name from a horse.
Robert Patterson Rithet was a prominent Victoria businessman and politician who raised thoroughbreds. He bought the 719 acres from the Dallas family in 1891 and named his farm “Broadmead” after his most beloved prizewinning racehorse. When Rithet passed away in 1919, his heirs decided to develop a holistic plan for the property which would preserve the area's natural landscape and character, and developers continued to work within the plan to build a comprehensive community. Community Features Broadmead village was built in 1993 as an open-air, west coast concept shopping centre to provide the community with a central gathering place along with a variety of amenities. Broadmead Village’s logo features a horse's head to maintain the historical connection to Rithet’s racehorse. Rithet’s Bog is a 42-hectare wetland in central Broadmead is the last remaining peat bog on the Saanich Peninsula. The bog was originally a cranberry swamp that was seasonally drained and farmed until all agricultural activity ceased to preserve the health of bog plants and the soil. In 1994 it was donated to the municipality and zoned as a nature sanctuary. There is plenty of recreation close at hand. Elk/Beaver Lake Park is a popular location for water sports year-round. The Saanich Commonwealth Place, built in time for the 1994 Commonwealth Games, is a prominent facility in the community and provides health and rehabilitation services, a gymnasium, indoor swimming and fitness schedules.
